How are Bali Batik fabrics made?
The range of Bali Batik fabrics is vast: currently there are nearly a thousand different designs in production. Batik is a traditional surface design technique from Indonesia. The base colour is created by dying fabric, scrunching it up and leaving it to dry, sometimes with natural additives such as salt or soda to give additional texture. Hoffman Bali Batiks are most often left to dry out in the sun, since the dyes react with sunlight, resulting in vibrant colours—a process that also helps make them colourfast.
Additional designs are then added with melted wax using a copper block engraved with a design, which is stamped onto the fabric. The wax resists any additional dyes and colours added. The fabric is, finally, treated with heat to remove the wax and to make it ready for use. While traditionally the colours used would be earth tones, you can now get any colour you can imagine in the Hoffman Bali Batiks range—and every metre is unique.
