Farm Charm by Gingiber for Moda Fabrics
Arkansas illustrator Stacie Bloomsfield specializes in sweet animal designs for the young—and the young at heart. She has been designing fabric lines for Moda alongside her successful stationery business since 2016.
So far, Gingiber collections have featured bears, foxes, deer, and other wild animals. For the Farm Charm collection, Stacie continues the theme from her previous line, Farm Fresh, with pigs, sheep, horses, and chickens—all in a bold colour scheme of red, white, and blue.
“This line was inspired by the charm of farm life,” she says, “where you can enjoy prancing ponies, feed the chickens, pet a sweet sheep, and watch a curly tailed piglet enjoying a roll in the mud!”
Farm Charm mixes small prints, larger animal prints, and a panel, as well as blenders to tie it all together. A full range of precuts is available.
Gingiber is an unusual name, so we just had to know where it comes from.
“Gingiber actually comes from a college project,” she explains. “I had opened up a Latin dictionary and found the word gingiber, which is Old Latin for ginger. I just was drawn to it.”
The inspiration behind Gingiber
Stacie is inspired by the Art Nouveau style and shows off a strong modern aesthetic in her work. “I’ve always been drawn to the serpentine lines and strong color blocking,” she explains.
In her designs, she also loves texture, tiny details, and creating interest, noting that: “My work aims to be approachable and still visually striking. I’m always trying to add a little zest to my customer’s life with my design work.”
The designs are drawn by hand on her iPad and then digitized on the computer, which she says is where colour and scale is decided.
Creating art, she says, comes naturally: “I’ve always wanted to be an artist. From the time I was a child, my favorite pastime was doodling.”
Making quilts from Farm Charm
Stacie does sew, but has yet to make a quilt—so plans to make one this year. In the meantime though, she has quilt pattern designer Natalie on hand to help design patterns for quilters.
It’s pretty common for Moda to release four complementary patterns for each fabric line, and Fam Charm is no different. This line has four quilts that are quite small and manageable in size, especially if you like to free motion quilt on a domestic machine. They are all 60” or smaller in size.
The quilt above is called Lucky Charm, and is a lap/baby quilt size sampler style quilt. The quilt can be made colourful or in black and white to suit your tastes, while still being distinctly Gingiber, with individual panel animals scattered throughout.
Modern quilt design fans will love the geometry and large piecing of the Patchwork Pig pattern, which is the biggest of the bunch. Whereas the Lucky Charm quilt is more traditional in design, this one has a highly creative, pig-shaped layout and is comprised from easy-to-piece triangles similar to a variety of Farm Charm prints.
Another modern quilt to try—and one that would make a very sweet baby gift—is Chicken Little, made from six stylized chicken-shaped blocks. While perhaps not for absolute beginners, new- ish quilters could readily attempt this design as it is mostly made from easy-to-work-with squares and triangles made from half squares.
Last but not least among this line of quilts is the eponymous Farm Charm. This one is more advanced in construction, with bottle and barn shapes, but comes together more quickly than expected thanks to the animal panels.
