Ombre Fairy Dust by V and Co for Moda
Both contemporary and timeless, V and Co’s latest ombre line Ombre Fairy Dust is perfect for stashing, as it will coordinate with so many other fabrics in your quilt projects. Here’s what you can expect from the latest collection.
V and Co has in the past produced metallic confetti and bloom sun print ombre fabrics, as well as regular ombres—and now, in 2020, the brand has delivered 32 new ombre shades with silver metallic star detailing: a very popular request.
These vibrant fabrics span the colour wheel, and are available in a full rainbow, plus black and grey. The collection also features two background fabrics—Bella Solids with the same silver stars—in both off-white and soft black.
Ombre Fairy Dust will be available in the usual bundles and precuts, as well as in a special Christmas colour bundle. We’ll also see five quilt patterns released at the same time, each showing off that appealing shifting-colour look.
Vanessa Christenson, the designer behind V and Co, has used ombre throughout her fabric design career, and says she’s delighted by its current popularity.
She recalls that her first ever fabric line nine years ago was called Simply Color. “It had ombre fabrics that coordinated with the prints,” she says. “Then three or four years ago, I pushed to get more colours, bringing it up to 20. Since then, we’ve added the overlays of sun prints, gold and silver. It seems like ombre is finally hitting the spotlight in the quilting world!“
What does an ombre fabric look like?
These Moda ombre fabrics display a gradient within one colour hue. The darker shades start at the selvedges, fading to a pastel in the centre, so when cut across the width you will see a shift in shading—from dark to light, then shifting to dark again.
These fabrics are available in fat quarter bundles, and they will offer 18 inches of length with the darkest shade to the lightest shade on any particular colour option.
The fantastic concept about ombre fabrics is that they can be used for any scrappy project, giving the appearance that you are using so many more colours and shades than you actually are. One cut of fabric can give you numerous possibilities, even when cutting it up and stitching the same colour back together again into units such as half square triangles.
The V and Co ombre colours were chosen and created both to work well on their own, along with a grouping of colours, or all together.
You can also be intentional and use an ombre instead of a specified colour in a quilt design for added depth and interest. Anywhere you’d choose a solid or a tone-on-tone blender, take a chance, and consider an ombre instead.
